From an essay by Dorothy Lees: "The body must be sypathetically plastic to the wiill and the idea. 'Thank heavan, you know what to do with your hands!' I was once told by an artist to whom i was sitting for the first time...Take for instance, the simple act of holding a bunch of flowers. It will be found, almost invariably, that if the model is not interested and has no perception of the artistic idea, she will take a grip of the flowers as though holding on for dear life, her fingers bunched together and the whole effect being one of woodenness rather than beauty, whereas the hand should fall naturally and easily like the decoration of an open fan, with graceful curvature of the wrists and fingers."
